Outreach help for existing businesses

Many smaller businesses, having survived the initial start-up, face different problems as they try to grow. These businesses haven’t been forgotten by Alliance for Enterprise and there is a team of experienced ‘Outreach Business Advisers’ in place to provide additional help to these companies.

John Leaver is one of the 3 advisers and, since his appointment in May of 2007, John has worked with more than 30 different businesses in the Ashfield area.

“The problems faced by small and medium sized businesses are many and varied,” he said. “My role is to help them find the way through.”

He has, for example, helped a gym franchise to target businesses in the area to increase corporate membership and as a result there has been a considerable upturn in membership. He has worked with a local sign company on a new costing system that has helped them improve their margins and win more business; and he has helped an established scaffolding business to change its remuneration system with the effect of both improving the living standards of employees and increasing profitability which, in turn, will lead to more jobs.

John has also helped a budding entrepreneur to produce a business plan for an ambitious, capital intensive project to launch his “product” on an international basis and advised another business on how to increase its levels of bespoke work and improve the effectiveness of its print and web-based communications.

“The aim is to provide businesses with practical help and advice to help them overcome any particular problems they may be facing in order that they can continue to grow and, as a result, be in a position to offer more jobs to the local community,” he said.
