Students faced their own ‘Dragons’ Den!’
Students from six of the region’s secondary schools faced their very own ‘Dragons Den’ during the recent Enterprise Week
In the same way that the real-life ‘Dragons’ in BBC Two’s popular venture capitalist programme ‘Dragons’ Den’ interrogate people about their business ideas, teams of four students from schools in Ashfield, Bolsover and Mansfield hoped they would fare better in front of a team of local ‘dragons'.
They had to pit their wits – and business acumen – against each other and with the winning team walking away with £250 for their school funds.
The contest was held at The Innovate Centre, Mansfield, as part of Enterprise Week
- an annual, UK-wide week of activities designed to inspire young people into turning their business ideas into reality. Last year, around 34,000 people under the age of 25 took the plunge and set up their own business.

Jointly organized by LEO, the local enterprise organization, and Mansfield-based no limits, the Dragon’s Den event was designed to inspire the local young entrepreneurs of tomorrow.
Said no limits Sarah Longmead: “Enterprise week plays a big part in encouraging young people to dare to turn their ideas into reality. It is a real opportunity for students to pressure-test their innovation and enterprise skills.”
The schools that took part were Sutton Centre Community College and Holgate School in Ashfield, Bolsover School and Shirebrook School in Bolsover and Queen Elizabeth’s Endowed School and The Manor School in Mansfield.
The winning Holgate team - led by Head of Business Studies Brian Redgrave pooled their ideas and sharpened their business acumen to create a new, innovative educational toy. The four Year 11 students – John Bevins, Amber Curtis, William Hydes and Cairie Green were delighted to be awarded the first prize.
