The Sky’s the Limit at Ashfield Scaffolding

By helping Ashfield Scaffolding Ltd (ASL) to achieve a grant and an interest free loan to purchase a new software programme designed specifically for scaffolding businesses, LEO has helped sustain the jobs of 36 existing employees and create at least three new full times posts at the company

LEO Outreach Adviser John Leaver said that ASL , located at a large, modern office and yard facility in Brierly Hill, Ashfield, was facing some significant issues when LEO first became involved. These were, principally, uneconomic job costing due to an old-fashioned remuneration package and an outmoded, paper-based, record system.

“Staff were suspicious about the new job costing system and, in the end, it was introduced on a trial period and then rolled out to the whole workforce.

“Interestingly, the move saw an increase in throughput of work and staff earnings increased accordingly,” said John.

In order to free up more time for Managing Director Roger Saxton to secure new business it was necessary to find a new approach to job costing and organising workflows.

“We found a new software package called ‘Strike’ which is designed specifically for scaffolding businesses,” said John.  “But the cost, including multiple licences and training, came in at around £8000.00 – and ASL couldn’t afford it at the time.

“We helped ASL to prepare a business plan and the application for a grant and interest-free loan under the auspices of the Ashfield Enterprise Support Scheme – and it was successful.

‘Strike’ is now fully operational and, given its new lease of life, the sky’s the limit for Ashfield Scaffolding.
