From Gas to Goals

After 20 years working as a gas engineer, John Hayes of Mansfield Woodhouse found that his heart was no longer in the job. But with bills to pay he still needed a guaranteed income.

He got in touch with Geoff Husband, the local Bizfizz coach and in the course of a face-to-face meeting, shared his dream of becoming a children’s football coach.

He already had two FA Coaching qualifications and was on a waiting list to do the coveted UEFA B course. John and Geoff began a series of business coaching sessions, exploring the options open to John and within six months he was able to start fulfilling his dream.

With support from his partner Val, who increased her working hours to supplement the family income, John set out to become a football coach. He is now coaching children at local schools and clubs and is part of Nottingham Forest’s Football in the Community scheme. “I am really happy helping children to learn football, and in the process, I help to develop their social and team building skills in a safe, fun environment,” said John.
