Getting plastered

When Lee Simpson received a notice to quit from his landlord, he could have given up on his business dreams and gone out and got plastered.

Lee’s fledgling business – The Derbyshire School of Plastering – was just getting off the ground when the notice to quit the building arrived. Bookings for the school were coming in fast via the company’s website – but without a building no courses could be held. Not one to give up, Lee approached LEO to see if there was anything that could be done to help him find new premises for the school – fast!

His case was taken up by Steve Maxwell, BizFizz coach for South Normanton and Pinxton, and it just so happened that Steve could help. Months earlier he had made contact with Mark Johnson, another local businessman, who with support from LEO was converting a former swimming baths in Tibshelf into a business centre – part of which will be used as an ‘incubation centre’ for new businesses.

Steve introduced Lee to Mark and, after a bit of negotiation, the plastering school had a new home, could honour its bookings and start to look forward. “One of the key elements we stress to new businesses is the importance of networking and developing contacts,” said Steve.

“Getting Lee and Mark together is a perfect example of why it’s so vital.” The Derbyshire School of Plastering provides training for both beginners and more advanced. Previous customers give glowing reports on the progress they make over just a few days of training,
